Who is Jonny Walker?

I’m Jonny, a teacher and writer. Most days you’ll find me getting excited about words … I’m based in East London, born in South Yorkshire, and work with young poets and mythologists across the globe.

I write children’s books about mythology, folklore and nature - my publishers are HarperCollins, Oxford University Press and Scholastic.

I have a unique teaching style, mixing mythology, nature, poetry and nonsense in ways that gets children buzzing.

My work has carried me from classrooms in East London to schools in India, caves in Greece and wild forests in the United States.

You can also find me teaching on Outschool, exchanging old wisdom online with young mythologists worldwide.

Hush now adults… the children are talking.

In 2024, I gave a TEDx talk at TEDxWalthamstow.

My message is that all children have a need to feel seen, to feel safe and to feel like somebody. And informal talk is at the heart of this endeavour.

When teachers and parents can learn to listen, we can begin to see the ‘diamonds in the chatter’, the hidden gems of meaning that children conceal in their informal talk.

And what does this look like in action?

My teaching fosters confident, playful children who enjoy experimenting with words.
